A tipper van is a light commercial vehicle with an open flat bed at the back, which has low sides plus a hinged tailgate. The cargo is transported on a platform and discharged at the point of destination. The hydraulic ram mechanism raises the front of the bed at an angle so that the load is tilted towards the rear of the vehicle.

Typical bulk loads that are delivered by a tipper van include loose construction materials such as rubble, sand, gravel, cement, soil, tree waste and litter. However, it is not suitable for carrying anything that can be damaged in the act of tipping out.
